VOTING PAIRS

NATIONAL POLICY CHANGE MR. SULLIVAN’S VIEWS An indication that the Opposition would not continue to grant the Government a pair whenever any of its jnembers ■ was ill or away on business overseas was given by Mr W. Sullivan. M.P*. for Bay of Plenty, in an address at a National Party meeting in Rotorua. “We have been very kind to the Government so far,’’ he said, “but I do not think that in iuture if they bring in legislation which cuts across our policy they will be entitled to pairs.

"In every case so far this session when the Prime Minister has approached Mr Holland and asked for a pair for one of his men who was absent ill the request has been granted, but in future when there is legislation we do not like we are going to refuse to allow this priv.lege." It had been apparent during this session that the Government was beginning to wake up to Uie fact that the Opposition was ■ now a power to be reckoned with, Mr Sudivan said.
