HIGH DEATH TOLL
COMMUNAL STRIFE RIOTING IN VILLAGES SOME ALMOST WIPED OUT (11.30 a.m. AMRITSAR, Aug. 10. Widespread disturbances in five villages near Amritsar today resulted in the deaths of 138 Moslems and two Sikhs. It is reported that the Moslem population of the three villages has been “practically liquidated.” Troops killed six Sikhs and injured 30 when the police opened fire on the outskirts of Amritsar where two pitched battles were fought between rival groups armed with bombs and guns. Two persons were killed and five injured in stabbing attacks in Lahore. A special correspondent of the Hindustan Times said 700 Hindus, Sikhs, and Moslems, including women and children, were killed in the rioting in the past eight days. He added that the entire population of 107 of Jalalabad village was killed four days ago and 78 Moslems were slain in a neighbouring village. A total of 488 wounded have been admitted to the Amritsar hospital.
