PLEA REJECTED
LEAVE TO APPEAL CHALKPIT MURDERERS PETITION FOR REPRIEVE (10 a.m.) LONDON, May 2. The Attorney-General, Sir Hartley Shawcross, refused applications byj Thomas John Ley and Lawrence JoMnj Smith for a flat to appeal to the’-Houlfe. of Lords against the" sentence of death for the murder of. John Mudie, whose body was found in a chalk pit. A friend of Ley said there could be no further appeal. The solicitors would inform Ley when the rejection of the request was officially confirmed. A member of the firm of solicitors representing Ley said that a petition to the Home Secretary was being organised It is understood that certain representations are also being made from Australia. The execution has been fixed for May 8. Ley was a former Minister of Justice in Australia.
