AUSTRALIAN ARMY
FORCE OF 30,000 SOUGHT, ENLISTMENTS TOTAL 11,300 RECRUITING SATISFACTORY, CANBERRA. May 1. The Australian Army authorities are aiming at a strength of approximately 30,000 men for the Australian interim army. At the end of April the figure of enlistments was about 11,300. Though the ultimate strength of the army has- been considered by the Defence Council, no decision has yet been made. The question will be related to talks with the Chief of the Imperial General Staff, Field Marshal Lord Montgomery. The Minister of the Army, Mr. Chambers, said that recruiting was proceeding satisfactorily, with a weekly average of from 90 to 100. The standard of physical fitness for recruits had not been relaxed. He denied the newspaper statement that the recruiting figures were so desperate that the army was accepting B2 volunteers for all service, including Japan.
