NEW STATE RECOGNISED '(10.15 a.m.) BATAVIA, May 1. The West, Borneo Council has accepted a draft statute in which the Dutch Commission-General representing the Netherlands Government has agreed to recognise West Borneo as an autonomous territory with its own Government. West Borneo comprises about one quarter of Dutch Borneo and is regarded as the richest part of the Netherlands East Indies economically. The Sultan of Pontianak, ruler of the principal town in West Borneo, is expected to be Governor. His whole family was murdered by the Japanese. The draft statute says West Borneo is prepared to co-operate in the establishment of the State of Borneo, which In 1949 is expected to federate to form a United States of Indonesia with the Republic of Java, Sumatra and Madura and the self-governing State of East Indonesia.
