INCREASED COSTS

GROWERS’ REQUEST SACKS EXTRA CHARGE PRODUCTION OF MAIZE A decision to apply for a sacks extra charge in the sale of maize was reached last night at the annual meeting of the Gisborne Maize Growers’ Associal°Mr. C. H. Cooper, who proposed the motion, claimed that the time was opportune to press the case for the growers. Consumers had had to pay extra for sacks on the purchase of other grains. , , . Mr. G. W. Armstrong suggested that while the move was desirable it might be wise to leave the application until May, when the position would be clarified, particularly in regard to the availability of sacks, and increased costs. . The president, Mr. Stuart McGuinness, said that by charging for sacks none would be saved and today, as never before, sacks must be saved. In the Dominion millions of sacks were used for fertiliser annually and only about one-sixth of them were returned to the companies. They were used for many purposes on fai'ms and many were hung over fences and left on the ground to rot. He was of the opinion that the principle of sacks extra for maize should be established because of the spiral of costs. _ , In seconding the motion, Mr. C. Tietjen said that shortly the growers would be faced with the use of the smaller sack with an increased charge of 2d per bushel. He felt the time was arriving when growers would have to appoach the Stabilisation Commission for an increase in price. # lf the growers could get sacks extra it would help them in the meanwhile. The motion was carried.
