SPORTS EVENTS ON DISTRICT FIELDS

WIDE _RANGE FOOTBALL_CONTESTS PROGRESS IN HOCKEY The opening-day programme of the race meeting on the Ivtakaraka course, the various Rugby and Association Football competitions, and hockey, basketball and golf offer a wide range of attractions in outdoor sports tomorrow. The indications are for mild autumn conditions and increased assemblies of competitors and supporters arc likely. Rugby competitions' in the various grades will be continued in the Poverty Bay union and sub-union areas and in the East Coast sub-unions-and the Wairoa (Hawke's Bay) sub-union. The star attraction on the Gisborne Oval will be the meeting between Marist and Old Boys seniors. Old Boys have shown promising form in successive wins against H. 5.0.8. and Kiwis, while 'Marist, in their only competition game, have accounted for Kiwis. In two of three games last season Old Boys dej feated Marist by narrow margins, but j Marist took the decision in the last encounter by 20 to nil, following which | they beat Celtic in the championship i play-off. Both teams have improved i since their last meeting and the issue in tomorrow's match is very open. Though defeated twice this season the improving Kiwis have given promising displays and their meeting with Celtic tomorrow should produce another interesting game. In the junior division a bright cur-tain-raiser on the Oval No. 1 ground should be provided by Old Boys (A) and H. 5.0.8. (B). Celtic juniors, who have drawn the bye, are to assemble at Barry Park at 1 p.m. for a practice run.
