Spindles of the Stone Age have been found on which the, Neolithic woman spun her wool by hand. Hundreds of years before the Christian era, the distaff was an important item in the household of the ancient Greek women. This was a stick held in the left hand, on which the wool was loosely mounted, the threads being drawn off with the right hand, the spinner at the same time giving them a spiral twist with the forefinger and thumb. The spun thread was then wound on to the spindle. The distaff was often an elaborate article sometimes made of ivory and very richly ornamented. Ladies of high rank even received gifts of a distaff and spindle wrought in gold. All through the Ages il has been woman’s task to spin. The word “spinster” is a relic of the time when the spinning was done by the younger unmarried women of the household.
