MAKING DEMOCRACY GO SPIRITUAL SIDE URGED NOW, (S R.) WELLINGTON, April 29 Introducing a serious note into the series of friendly speeches at the Government’s welcome to the Australian servicemen’s delegation, Mr I. C. Neagle. general secretary, said he was conscious of the Wanganclla lying not far away, but he did not judge the New Zealanders’ attitude towards Australians by that. However, he felt the time had come when we had to make our democracies work and instil into the people's minds a high regard for democracy, which some of them lacked. Men had fought and died for its privileges, but the v would not fall into their laps. The militaristic way had failed, and though it might sound curious coming from a hard-boiled Digger, they must try the spiritual side. There was always a sense of spirituality in the soldier and it became intensified with danger. “We have had two chances,” concluded Mr Neagle. “We will never get another.”
