A note in the annual report submitted by the chairman,. IVIr. M. X. Trafford, at yesterday’s special estimates meeting of the Cook Hospital Board on the increased incidence of abortion in the district, led Mr. 11. H. Barker to suggest tiiat where the medical staff was aware that criminal abortion had occurred it should at least give the police a lead which might possibly lead to a reduction in tlie number of cases. lie said he was aware that the medical profession had an ethical objection to disclosing tlio affairs of patients, and that the board came up against the old question: Should a doctor tell? Xlie board had a duty, however, to co-operate with the police in suppressing the social evil represented by criminal abortion. The board was informed by the medical superintendent, Dr. It. J. B. Hall, that in his opinion criminal abortions bad increased in recent years in this district. He was unable to give any definite information on the subject, however.
