PRESIDENT RETIRES

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE WAIROA-H.B. FEDERATION The tenth annual council meeting of the Wairoa-Hawke's Bay Federation of Women's Institutes was held in the Wairoa Institute rooms this month. After the singing of the institute song and the recital of the aspiratons. Mrs. C. Innes Walker extended a warm welcome to delegates and members. An apology was received from Mrs. Hill. Mrs. Noble-Campbell, on behalf of the federation, presented sprays to three members of the executive. Mrs. Walker, retiring president, Mrs. Single, retiring secretary, and Mrs. D. MacDonald, whose term of office had expired. Mrs. Noble-Campbell paid a tribute to the work done by these members, who were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The annual report and balance sheet were confirmed. President’s Final Address In her final address as president. Mrs. Walker stated that she was not giving up her interest in the federation. She wished to thank all members for their loyal support and co-operation, especially Mrs. Single, who had been a tower of strength. Mrs. Walker also paid a tribute to Miss Spence, who had been a valuable member, and friend to both Maori and European members. Opoutama, Ruakituri, Tiniroto, Tuai. Wairoa, Sen-, ior and Junior and Whakaki. A remit from Whakaki was heard, suggesting that some 'competent person, who knew Maori hand craft be asked to judge the Maori competitions. Mrs. Beattie, voluntary organiser, reported having visited four institutes. A junior circle had been formed at Nuhaka. Mrs. Beattie also gave a very full and comprehensive report of the Dominion council meeting held in Christchurch in February. Mrs. Arthur reported having sold 350 eggless cookery books,_ There was much discussion on drama and institutes were asked to work up plavs, making the drama festival in Wellington their goal. Travel trips were also discussed. Competition Results The results of the competitions were:—Challenge vase for three articles (soft toy. Anzac biscuits, an article made from one sugar bag): Kaitawa, Ruakituri and Wairoa), equal, 1. Sugar ! bowl (for most points with 12 or less | members): Ruakituri, 1. Maori challenge vase (set of pois): Whakaki. Federation banner (job. limerick on | federation president, and hand-worked j tray cloth): Wairoa, 1; Kaitwa, 2; Tuai, 3. The soft toys are being donated to CORSO. The potato competition, heaviest yield from three tubers, was won by Mrs. Mac Kenzie, Tiniroto, with 251 b. During the afternoon musical items were'given by Mrs. Drage. Wairoa, and three Opoutama members. Afternoon tea was served by the executive. The new executive members are: Mrs. Noble-Campbell, Tiniroto, president; Mrs. A. Mayo. Wairoa, secretary; Mesdames Arthur. Kaitawa. and P. Jones, Tiniroto. vice-presidents: Mrs. Deacon, Wairoa, Mrs. Hurrey. Tuai, Mrs. Dawson, Tuai. Mrs. Brown, Opoutama, Maori representatives, and Mrs. Gallagher, Kaitawa. At the conclusion of the meeting. Mrs. Walker moved a vote of thanks to the judges, Mrs. N. Walker, cooking. Mrs. Travis, sewing. Mr. Yates, limericks, and Mr. Moana. pois. and also to the competition stewards, Mesdames P.! Jones and S. Mann, for the efficient | manner in which they carried out their | duties. Mrs. Walker added that she had a good successor in Mrs. NobleCampbell and wished her all success.
