GIFT HOSTESSES

A number of friends were eager to be hostesses for Miss Joan Bartram prior to her wedding which took place to-day (after being postponed from last Wednesday because of the bridegroom’s inability to be present). Amongst the hostesses have been Mrs. Chas. Matthews who invited a large number of friends to her home, “Alyth”. Mangapapa for a miscellaneous afternoon. At this party the guest of honour wore a dusky pink wool crepe frock and was assisted by one of her bridesmaids, Miss Mary Walton, _ in opening an array of attractive gifts. Mrs Matthews, hostess, was in a black jet-studded frock and had arranged mixed bowls of flowers about the room for the party. Beautiful chrysanthemums and zinnias attractively decorated the sunny lounge of the Tolaga Bay Inn last Wednesday afternoon when Mesdames H. R. Irving and K. G. Mclntosh also entertained at a gift party in honour of Miss Bartram. Yet another party was arranged by Miss Mary Walton and Miss Helen Veitch and took the form of a luncheon at the Masonic hotel. A dozen guests attended, each bringing a recipe for the bride-to-be who was in a fawn coat worn over a checked frock, and a brown hat. Miss Veitch was in a navy blue ensemble and Miss Walton had chosen a brown hat, coat and frock. This popular bride was also entertained by Miss Joan Izod at her home, at a pantry and kitchen evening. The flowers were in autumn colourings and competitions were enjoyed by the

guests. Miss Walton assisted the brideelect, who was in a pinky-mauve frock to open her gifts. A scarlet frock with embroidery on it was worn by Miss Izod. The two bridesmaids from the South Island, Misses Joan Burt, Christchurch and Brenda Cranswick, Greymouth, arrived in time to be joint hostesses at an enjoyable cocktail party at Miss Bartram’s home on Thursday. The guests were invited from five until seven and all brought “something green”, for the guest of honour who was in a floral frock. Miss Burt was wearing pale pink with a black pattern on it, and Miss Cranswick was in a- cocktail suit with a honey coloured top and brown skirt.
