11 MEN ENTOMBED
GOLD MINE FIRE RESCUE SQUADS’ BID FIGHTING SMOKE PERIL (11 a.m.) QUEBEC, April 25. Eleven men were trapped alive in the rich east Malartic gold mine yesterday by an underground fire in which one miner died from smoke poisoning. Four others escaped unhurt. It is believed that the men inside the mine are still alive hours after their exit was blocked. Rescue squads, with special mine fire-fighting apparatus, are working a round-the-clock shift in an effort to reach the men. Meantime, air is being pumped to the lower levels in an effort to force the smoke to the surface. The’ fire is believed to have been started by a cigarette butt dropped in the underground lunch-room.
