TRADE OFFER TALKS
TARIFF COUNTRIES PAIRED OFF FIRST CONFERENCE TO-DAY CENEVA. April 22. The executive of the World Trade Organisation’s preparatory committee has fixed dates for bilateral meetings between delegations from member States. The delegations on these dates will exchange offers of tariff concessions. The first meeting is to-morrow between the United States and Australia. Ninety-six such bilateral conferences are scheduled. New Zealand meets the United States on April 30 and South Africa on May 5. Australia meets South Africa and India on May 28. No dates have yet been assigned for 24 other pairs of countries. Some of these are pairs of Empire countries, while others do not trade much together. The total of 120 pairs of countries represents a reduction to the simplest reasonable set of combinations. The negotiating teams will meet, exchange offers, explain them and fix dates for continuing negotiations. The fact that only a few dates are assigned to pairs of Empire countries does not mean that they will not negotiate. The Empire conference in London is, in effect, being continued at Geneva. .
