RUAPEHU ACTIVE
SEVERAL ERUPTIONS HEIGHT OF 9000 FEET There were several eruptions at Mjt. Ruapehu on Tuesday. The first, at seven o’clock in the morning, was a fairly large eruption. At noon an earth tremor was felt at Ohakune. A loud rumbling from the crater at 5.45 on Tuesday evening was followed by an eruption which sent smoke and dust into the air to a height of 9000 ft. above the mountain top (9175 ft.). The cloud which formed was mushroomshaped find when it settled there was a clear space between its stem and the crater. Occurring at sunset, a spectacular effect was created, the last rays of the sun colouring the smoke in pinks and reds The cloud remained in its position over the crater for five minutes before breaking up. The eruption was comparable with those which occurred two years ago.
