FOOD FOR BRITAIN

Sir,—lt is gratifying to read that we have done so much to help semistarving Britain by making available an extra 4,000,0001 b. of meat and 175,000 lb. of butter. But only when these figures are analysed do we realise how little extra the people of Britain will receive individually. Four million pounds of meat would give each of the 46,000,000 people of Britain 1 l-3oz. of meat extra per annum, while we would have to send 175,000 extra pounds of butter regularly every year for 18. years before each person would receive even a meagre ounce extra. , Of course, we know it is the aggregate amount that counts, but when we read that huge quantities of fat (desperately needed) have been held in storage for many months in New Zealand through lack of shipping, and that food for Britain is held up in almost every port of the world for the sarne reason, it makes one sick at heart in sympathy for the people of Britain. CITIZEN.
