WAGES RISE CLAIM
APPLICATION FOR FIXTURE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 26. An application for a fixture for the hearing of the claim by the Federation of Labour for a general increase in wages will be made to the Court of Arbitration this morning. The application will be made by the secretary of the federation, Mr. K. Baxter. The Minister of Labour, Mr. A. McLagan, said last night that in view of the contentious statements which have been appearing in the press in reference to the application, it seemed advisable to point out to all concerned that once the application had been lodged with the court, the publication of comment dealing with its merits or demerits, or intended to influence the court, would be a breach of law. The publication of comment on a similar application made in 1941 resulted in the newspaper concerned being prosecuted for contempt of court.
