TIMBER ACCUMULATES

INSUFFICIENT TRANSPORT (P.A.) AUCKLAND, March 25,

Accumulated stocks of sawn timber at mills in the Rotorua district could not be handled by the Railways Department because of a shortage of trucks, and the road transport industry had been asked to bring timber from the mills to Auckland. Evidence to this effect was given before the goods service charges tribunal in a sitting yesterday. The New Zealand Road Transport Alliance and the Carriers’ Federation asked the tribunal to fix a new rate for the cartage of timber during the present railway shortage owing to variations in the cost between the rate fixed in 1945 and the present operating costs.

The tribunal adjourned until to-day io allow the carriers’ and the Transport Department’s accountants to reach some agreement on operating costs affecting the proposed rate.
