CONVICTION QUASHED
CARNAL KNOWLEDGE CASE NEW TRIAL ORDERED i p a ) WELLINGTON, March 26. Alfred James Gillespie, who was found guilty in the Supreme Court at Auckland on a ' charge of unlawful carnal knowledge, had his conviction quashed by the Appeal Court and a new trial ordered, the prisoner being granted bail and ordered to report twice a week to the police at Rotorua or Auckland, and to refrain from all communication with his wife. When the case was argued before the court, Mr. A H. Johnstone, K.C., for the appellant, submitted that a new trial should be ordered or the conviction quashed on the grounds that there was no corroboration of the offence, and that the evidence between Gillespie and his wife, which the accused had desired to lead, had been wrongly excluded. ______
