GRASSMERE ORCHARD

BOUGHT BY GOVERNMENT (P.A.) HASTINGS. Jan. 30.

After prolonged negotiations the Government has acquired the wellknown Grassmere orchard for the settlement of ex-servicemen.

The property consists of about 80 acres fronting St. George's road north and running back to the Ngauroro River. Its purchase will make possible a substantial advance in the settlement of servicemen in the district, a number of whom have been graded for fruitgrowing but whose settlement is being held up because of the unavailability of suitable land.

Fifty-six acres of the property are planted in pip and stone fruits, and a further seven acres in asparagus. Included on the area is the biggest single block of pears in the Dominion. It is proposed to sub-divide the property into six orchards.

The Government takes possession on June 1.
