EXPORT KILLINGS
MEAT INDUSTRY PRODUCTION RATES A slight decrease of approximately 600 tons compared with the corresponding period last season is shown in the export meat killings at New Zealand freezing works for the period from October 1, 1946. to December 28, 1946, according to the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board in its initial survey of the new season's production. The Dominion average for lambs and ewes showed a 31b increase over last year’s figures while wethers made a 41b improvement this season. The aver-, ages were, the fi | res in parentheses being those for last season: North Island: Lambs, 35.601 b, (32.671 b); wethers , 64.85 (59.12); ewes, 61.08 (58.79). Dominion average: Lambs, 35.71 (32.90): wethers, 84.81 (59.00); ewes, 61.10 (58.73). Last season’s drought conditions in the North Island resulted in early slaughtering of lambs. This season’s conditions are more normal, resulting in killings of lambs being approximately 200,000 carcases less than for the same period last season. Although the weather during the last three or four months has been generally unseasonable, stock appears to be coming forward in excellent condition. The average weights of sheep and lambs killed are considerably ahead of those of last season and are the highest recorded for this period since the 1940-41 season
Export killings to December 28 are set out below, with the corresponding figures for the previous season in parentheses—
