PLOTS AT HOME

SCHOOL GARDENING TE HAPARA SUCCESS A system of home gardens was strated' at the Te Hapara School in 1945 with such success that many other of the schools in the district have adopted the scheme. This year the plan was carried on at Te Hapara with an ev’n greater measure of success. Each child had a plot of ground at home, the plot measuring 12tt. by 3ft. There were 31 entrants in the vegetable garden competition and 10 in the contest for flower gardens. Free seeds were given by the Hawke's Bay Education Board to all requiring them for the purpose of the home gardens. As some of the competitors were only in Std. 1 at school there was a stipu. lation that parents could dig the ground for them. The agriculture instructor to the department, Mr. R. R. Middleweek, gave the children elementary lessons on vegetable and flower gardens, and numerous questions were fully answered. Last month Mr. Middleweek spent a whole day judging the gardens. The prize-winner in the flower garden section knew' the names of the 16 flowers in her plot. Forty certificates of merit were awarded. The thanks of the organisers were expressed to Messrs. Berridge and F. J. Crafts for donating prizes Results:— Vegetable Garden (31 entries).— Annette Fiuueane, 1; Peter Hughes. 2. Catherine Olsen, 3

Flower Garden (10 entries). —Winifred Akers, 1; Judith Gregory, 2; Allan Crosby, 3.
