VIKINGS GROUNDED
AIR SERVICE TO EUROPE TECHNICAL FAULTS WINTER ICING DEFECTS (11 am) LONDON. Dec. 9. A number of British European Airways new 21-passenger Vickers Vikings have been grounded. . . , , British European' Airways introduced Vikings on a number of Continental services, replacing Dakotas at the beginning of November. , The grounding of the Vikings is reported to be due to technical reasons'. British European Airways announced that with the approach of winter it had checked the Viking under icing conditions Difficulties were encountered because of the tendency of some aircraft to develop instability The Viking, pending further investigation, would be temporarily withdrawn from service. Alternative arrangements were being made to operate services with Dakotas and other aircraft. A message from Johannesburg says that South African Airways have ordered eight Vickers Vikings for the .Tohannesburg-Capetown service. The first Viking is due for deliveiy next May. --
