Mrs. F, O'Connell and her family, Wellington, are staying with the former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Morey, Stout street. Miss FI. A. Herbert, Adelaide, and formerly of Gisborne, is the guest of her brother. Mr. J. T. Herbert, Bushmere.

Mr. Allan Watkins, who has been staying with his relatives, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Tomlinson. Braeburn, returned to-day to his home at Mercury Bay Coromandel Mrs. F. Harrison, who has been visiting her daughter, Mrs. S. S. Hardman, Iranui road, returned during the week to her home in Auckland.

Mrs. F. B. Dodge. London, who has been spending a holiday with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. B. Dodge, Gladstone road, is . visiting friends in Auckland.

engagements Warren—Wildish.—Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Wildish have much pleasure in announcing the engagement of their youngest daughter, Elizabeth Patricia, to Ernest, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Warren, Gisborne. PRESBYTERIAN ASSOCIATION Mrs. T. Perston presided over the monthly meeting of the Presbyterian Women’s Association, held recently in St. Andrew’s schoolroom. A large attendance listened intently to Sister E. H. Elliott, who gave an interesting talk on her work as a nursing sister in a mission hospital in the Punjab, India. The president and members accorded her a hearty vote of thanks. The tea hostess was Mrs. H. Patterson. TENNIS NOTES Good games were enjoyed by a record attendance' of players at the Kaiti courts last Saturday afternoon, a cool breeze making conditions very pleasant. Sweet peas were used effectively on ■ the tea table, the hostesses being Mesdames E, R, Brown and E. Stevenson. Among those present were Mesdames B. Hacche. L. Burdett, D. Quinn, T J. Corkery. B. King; Misses J. Cranswick, S. Murdoch, R. Millar, T. Loffler, N. Broadhurst, R. Williams, J. Gregory, M. Barnard, E. Barron, J. Dods, J. Morley, M. Reid, N. Symes, P. Chrisp, P. Wellbourne, P. Jaipeson, E. Benson, D, Fraser, E. Poulgrain, B. Lar.glands, B. Cooper, L. Harris and H. Cranswick. BURNS CLUB With Mr. W. Turbitt in the chair, the monthly meeting of the Burns Club was held recently in the Sutcliffe rooms. The: meeting opened with the singing of “The Star o’ Rabbie Bums.” •Members were reminded of the Burns dinner to be held on January 25. The speaker for the evening was Mr. Norvcll K. Brown, who gave some of his experiences while a prisoner of war on the Altmarck and the Graf Spec. Mr. Brown’s address was listened to with rapt interest, members giving him a vote of thanks by acclamation. ■ •

A community sing followed supper, the meeting concluding with the National Anthem and “Auld Lang Syne”.

GARDEN PARTY At the residence of Mrs. C. H. Ferris, Ormond road, the St. John’s Ladies’ Guild, Mangapapa, held their annual garden party last Thursday. Canon ‘A. F. Hall, in a few appropriate words, opened the very successful function, the proceeds of which go to the building fund.

Floral tributes were presented to Mesdames A. F. Hall, Trowell, Ferris and Smaillie.

The guests were received by the president, Mrs. Trowell, and the hostess, Mrs. C. H, Ferris. Stall-holders were:—Afternoon tea, Mesdames Williams, McNab, Kerr, Andrew, Hadwen, A. Wallis and Miss Hingston; games, Mrs. Steed; quoits, Mrs. Clare; produce, Mesdames Elliott and Holt; novelty, Mesdames Carter, Willis, Crawford; work stall ‘‘odds and dnds” donated by Miss L. Trowell, Mesdames Brewster and Fletcher.

Two classic dances were performed on the lawn by Misses M. Goodyear and J. Bell. They were rewarded With dainty posies. WELLINGTON PARTY

Mrs. Ralph Simpson, formerly of Gisborne, held a successful party at her new home in Kelburn recently on honour of Miss Isla Duncan, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. J. (Pat) Duncan, formerly well known residents of Gisborne, whose marriage to Mr. Ormonde Worsdale, Wellington, took place in the Capital city on Saturday'. The reception rooms were gay with azalea blossom, carnations and stocks in rose and mauve tonings. A happy time was spent in novel competitions and games. After a. savoury buffet tea, the guest of honour, assisted by one of her prospective bridesmaids. Miss Hazel Biehl, who was a fellow member of the W.A.A.F. during the war years, opened many delightful gifts of a miscellaneous nature for her future home. Mrs Simpson was frocked in a summer print of clover and green design, while Miss Duncan wore a pretty frock of delphinium blue flat crepe. At the conclusion of the party musical honours were accorded the hostess and guest of honour by the large group of friends present.
