Christmas Carols Banned

The Russian authorities at Selnvenn banned “Silent Night” and other Christmas carols and directed that Christmas plans must not include representations of angels, says the British United Press correspondent in Berlin. The Liberal Democratic Party has protested.

Shortage of Racing Oars Sustained efforts to secure supplies of new oars for the district clubs, through the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association, have so far borne no fruit, and the clubs are facing serious difficulties in the oonduct of their programmes, and also in preparing crews for regatta events. At a meeting of the East Coast Rowing Association executive, held yesterday, it was decided, on the initiative of the Gisborne club, that the national association be advised of the position and urged to do everything possible to expedite the delivery of oars ordered from Australia early this year. It was stated that both the Poverty Bay and Gisborne clubs were now using the last of their ieserves, and that further breakages would make it impossible to race or to train crews for major fixtures.
