N.Z.-BUILT SHIPS
WARTIME ACHIEVEMENT (P.A.I WELLINGTON, Dec. 9. No less than £3,000.000 worth of shipping was constructed during the war in Auckland Wellington, Lyttelton, and Port Chalmbers by New Zealand marine engineers, said Mr. E. Brown, chief inspector of machinery and chief surveyor of ships in the Marine Department speaking to the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Institute of Marine and Power Engineers on Saturday.
Mr. Brown contended that Australia's repeated inquiry for mine-sweepers, in addition to the five already purchased was a compliment to the work of the leading construction engineer, Mr. G. E. Breeze, and his staff.
The £3.000,000 worth of craft included 13 minesweepers, 12 anti-sub-mrrine boats. 112 ft. long, which cost £35,000 each and were now selling at £1255. two oil barges 50 45ft tow boats. 75ft steel tugs. 1G 114 ft powered cargo vessels. 240 barges, and innumerable smaller craft.
