VALLEY ROAD FIRE

A quick response by the Gisborne Fire Brigade to a telephone call at 7.29 o'clock yesterday morning probably saved the house in Valley road, occupied by Mr. T. F. Walsh from being severely damaged by fire. When thc brigade arrived, less than five minutes after receiving the call, the back portion of the house was ablaze and the fire was commencing to spread. A 300 ft. lead of hose was run out and the fire which was confined to a large wash-house, and lumber shed at the rear of the dwelling was quickly got under control. Mr Walsh had left home for work and Mrs. Walsh was still in bed when flic fire was first noticed. Children were playing at the back of the house. Part of the furniture was removed from the house by neighbours when it appeared as it the fire might spread to the front rooms. The lead of hose was attached to a hydrant at the corner of Ormond road and Valley road, the water being drawn from the Taumata Hill resevoir.
