BOY’S 777 FT. FALL
RIGHT LEG BROKEN (11 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. G. Charles Wilfred Carter, aged 15, fell 777 ft. down the shaft of the Barborough main colliery at Mexborougli and his only injury was a broken right leg, says the Evening News. Carter, as he fell, seized one of the chains of the descending cage and landed on top of the cage when it was halfway down the 510-yard main shaft. Carter’s plight was not realised when the cage stopped at the pit bottom. The cage was about to ascend when another boy heard him moan. He looked up and saw Carter hanging over the edge.
