NEW ZEALAND FORESTS

PROTECTION FROM FIRES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 6. The Minister of State Forests, Mr. C. F. Skinner, stated that the protection of the New Zealand forests against fire would be of a higher standard this year than ever before. Efficient means of detection and suppression were in readiness by the State Forest Service to deal with the hundreds of fires which occurred during the dry months. The Minister, however, appealed for full public co-operation in the work of preventing fires and reporting those which occurred. He emphasised that it was unlawful to light fires for land clearing without a permit in many specified areas during the summer months.
