Ninety-eight Tiger Moth aircraft, in which thousands of. New Zealand airmen received their initial flying ing during the war, are now offered for sale to the public by tender. Stored at Taieri and Woodbourne air stations the aircraft, which are in various states or airworthiness, are being disposed of by the War Assets Realisation Board. Hours of service the Tiger Moths have seen - range from 859 in one case to 5561 for the most used of the aircraft. The average machine has flown something between 2000 and 3000 hours and the engines have run for about half this time. Since they were last completely overhauled the engines have run on the average of 600 hours. A reserve price has been placed on all the aircraft. It ranges from £3O for the cheapest up to £330, according to the condition of the machine. The reserve on more than half the clanes is fixed at between £IOO and The buying of the Tiger Moths is only an initial expense. Befort the aircraft can be flown a number of civil aviation regulations must be complied with. It must have a certificate of airworthiness, must be registered as a civil aircraft, and must have the correct nationality and civil registration marks painted on it. In addition the plane must carry the necessary log books giving the full history of the airframe and engine. . The War Assets Realisation Board is also calling for tenders for the sale of 70 Gipsy Major I. engines in storage near Wellington, at Woodbourne, Whenuapai and at Taieri. The reserve placed on these ranges from £6O to £145. The Gipsy Major engines power the Tiger Moth and those offered for sale have run up to 4000 hours.
