BETTER FIELDS AT WOODVILLE

16 ACCEPT FOR THE GOTHARD HANDICAP BEHAVE SEEMS AT THE PEAK OF HIS FORM (Herald Special Service.) The fields for the second day of the Woodville District Jockey Club’s summer meeting are better both in quality and quantity than they were on the opening day.

Sixteen have made the acceptance in the Gothard Handicap, one of the biggest fields for an open middle distance handicap on the Woodville tracks for many years. All the- other events have also filled most satisfactorily, while the Novice Stakes will have to be run in divisions. There will be a number of horses that were not seen in action on the opening day.

The following is a review of the horses that will be contesting their respective races:

PAPATAWA HURDLES

Grand Central, as known, has only contested two hurdle races, to win both. He came home so solidly last Saturday that he must be very hard again. Tracer has been in the money no loss than six times without winning a hurdle race. His turn must come, but he is only a moderate at best. /

Gay Flame has a first and a second to his credit this season in as many starts. He must be in the final summing-up again, Vassilikos was third last week following his win at Napier Park. However, he has lightened up a little in condition. Foreign Coin will need to improve on last week’s running to be in at the kill this time. Foxada is well reported upon as a likely winner in the very near future. Fuzzy Wuzzy, Beau Jewel, and Genghiz Khan are newcomers to hurdling, although the second-named ran last Saturday. Theolateral schools well in private and has one minor place to his credit. Charles Edward is on the improve, hut he is getting into the sere and yellow of his racing career.

Hazaboy ran a fair race last Saturday for fourth and is a recent winner up north, lie reads better than the remainder.

NOVICE STAKES

There is not a great deal of form offering to help in the selection of one’s fancy in either the first or the second division. Cincture has a couple of minor placing to his credit, while Alton Water was runner-up in a recent effort. l'lak is another that has been in the money this season. Sunburn has a few placings to his credit, but the balance of the First Division has little or no form. In the Second Division the field docs not, on paper, appear as strong perhaps as the first. Beau Kaide, Matara and Shcilwyn are the only ones to have weighed-i'i in any of their races. Osa, with a jump-out, would be hard to beat.

GOTHARD HANDICAP

Financial, 8.13. has not yet struck his best form and gave no indication in his last effort of making a quick return to his best. Areo, 8.13, in his one start this season—and that over a short course—was third, which points to the Coronach gelding being hard to beat now. Fortune's Smile, 8.9, was second last Saturday in the open sprint, which points to his good chances now. Behave, 8.7, is a recent winner and seems to be at the peak of his form. Flying Ace 8.0. is another entrant that lias been racing consistently and he. too, has the right credentials. Merry Robin, 7.11, won last week, but the rise of 111 b. brings him near the better class opposition. Top Shot. 7.9, third last week, lias paid for carrying 81b. overweight as he has been awarded 7.9. Dilcas, 7.8. was a little unlucky not to have been first last Saturday instead of second. However, his form is not 100 reliable.

Silver Pal, 7 8, is a light-weight con sideration.

Carnfcrth. 7.5. was third at Feilding but he is not reliably consistent. Fine Kin, 7.3 has not yet struck form ibis season

French Count, 7.3, is gradually coming back to form, but still requires another race or two, judging bv his outward appearance. Griffin, 7.11. won well last Saturday, 'if narrowly: he should appreciate the light-weight scale of weight. He is also in the hack 10 furlong race Skyhawk, 7 1. is not fancied at all. . Argumentative. 7.0. is a newcomer at middle-distance racing. Carev 7 0 and Tavern Light. 7.0. are not confident recommendations.

JUV_. ,_E HANDCAP

Kumari won well nt Feildimr ."’■•l must tin toutth minin, although Iwo-year-old form tlii-s season has not horn consistent.

B(*nu Flight hns pot raced since running second to Lady Christine last September at Wanganui . Bronstar and Sir Denzil have not yet sported silk in public. Diplomat was third at his last start to Garry and Demonic at Napier Park; he has done well since.

Treneere was third last Saturday, a place she also occupied the first day at Napier Park. c

Of the others. TCaramea may do host a: she was just touched for third last week Slu* can cal lop, but is finding five furlongs a little too far.

RAILWAY HANDICAP

Royal Heir. 9.7, is n recent winner, but may find 9.7 a tidy weight to lump. Findnn 9.C. is in need of and. anyway six furlongs may be too short for Ihc grey Sir Bradbury. B.G. won iho bin snrint at the Wellington meeting held at Awapuni, but was nowhere the next dav

Theocritus. 3.1. is not racing as well ns he misht,: he cannot be recommended or recent outings. Colonier. 7.1(1 is also in the hack race' he won the open sprint at Fendin'* recently.
