WAIROA CARNIVAL

REVIVAL THIS YEAR DISPOSAL OF FUNDS Hopes of a revival of the Wairoa carnival of some years ago were entertained by all sections at a public meeting held in the, Wairoa Borough Council chambers this week. The meeting, convened by the carnival committee, attracted an unusually large and enthusiastic audience, the majority of whom figured prominently in a lengthy discussion on the disposal of the proceeds of next year's carnival.

In the vicinity of £7OO had been donated to patriotic purposes from the 1946 carnival, said Mr. G. B. Powell, who presided, and he hoped that this year, if organised properly, there should be no trouble in handing over more than £IOOO.

A discussion on the disposal of the available funds resulted in the majority supporting the proposal that, public swimming baths should take priority over the proposed civic centre. A minority were of (he opinion that (he proceeds should be directed to the £IO.OOO fund appeal at present being conducted for the purpose of building the civic centre. The Mayor, Mr. C. V. Chamberlain, pointed out that with a £l for £1 Government subsidy, if a swimming bath could be incorporated in the civic centre, the position would be met. The question of the disposal of the funds was held over until a further public meeting in February. A new committee was elected and is expected to meet at an early date to draw up a tentative programme for the carnival, which will commence on Friday. January 24. and conclude on Monday, February 3.
