NEW SLEEPING HOUSE

NGARUAWAHIA PA MEMORIAL TO MAORI BN. (P.A.) AUCKLAND, March 26. Four or more Maori craftsmen will be occupied for at least a year in preparing the carving to adorn the new sleeping house which is to be erected at Ngaruawahia pa as a memorial to the Maori Battalion. The building is expected to be the finest of its kind in the Dominion. Situated on a commanding position overlooking the Waikato River, the new building will lie within a stone’s throw of. the famous King’s House in the centre of the pa. It is to consist of two storeys and will provide accommodation for many visiting Maoris who are guests at Ngaruawahia at special tribal gatherings. The construction is to be in reinforced concrete, but the interior and external facings will be lavishly and traditionally decorated with woodcarvings. Princess Te Puea Herangi, who is responsible for the project, said that the estimated cost was £IO,OOO. On the completion of the building it was intended to install a specially carved case containing the names of all the officers and men of the Maori Battalion.
