CHECK-UP BY ‘THE YARD’
FOREIGN CRIMINALS DEPORTATION PLANNED (9.30 a.m.) LONDON. March 25. Detectives of the Special Branch <?£ Scotland Yard are making a systematic check on the more recent histories of hundreds of stateless persons who, during the last 10 years, have entered Britain, says the Daily Telegraph. It is intended to deport those with criminal records.
The check is being made because police chiefs have reported that numerous criminals convicted _of serious offences had proved to be without nationality, and because of this magistrates were unable to order deportation. Many of these foreigners lost their nationality because of political changes in their own countries. Some received special permits to come to Britain and others were international criminals who were smuggled in. Those who were smuggled in served tc-rms of imprisonment for offences against the immigration laws and then, on release, resorted to crime for a livelihood.
