INDIAN SETTLEMENT MURDER AND TORTURE LONDON, March 22. The British Military Court at Rangoon to-day heard the first part of the story of the “eastern Lidice,” in which all the inhabitants were killed by the Japanese and all homes burned down, says Reuter's correspondent in Rangoon. Eight Japanese officers and six members of the Japanese securiii - service appeared before the court charged with killing or torturing 637 men, women arid children in.the Indian settlement of Kalago, 10 miles east of Moulmein. The prosecution said that in June, 1945, the Japanese entered Kalago to try to secure information about the operations of British parachutists. The Japanese returned to the village In July and strung the villagers up to the beams of houses and beat them all night in attempts to get information. The next morning all the villagers were blindfolded, led to nearby wells, toayonetted and thrown in whether dead or alive.
