AIR STATION FIRE
JAP. OCCUPATION ZONE
WAS TO HOUSE R.N.Z.A.F. KURE, March 20. The whole of the Air Force station at Bofu, where the New Zealand airmen were expected to be stationed, was threatened by a fire which last night swept through four, double-storey barracks buildings. Fanned by a high wind, the blaze was impossible to control. It was fortunate that there was no loss of life Hundreds of rounds ot exploding ammunition made the fire-fighters’ task perilous, but airmen, together with Japanese firemen from neighbouring towns, succeeded in saving two other large buildings occupied by the Australian Air Force.
There is still more than enough barrack accommodation for the Australians and New Zealanders, but it will take time to get it in order. Though no statement of policy is at present available, it is presumed that the New Zealanders will in the meantime stay in Iwakuni, the other main airport in the Commonwealth area, when they arrive soon.
