PARKING AREA

PURCHASE ADVOCATED CARS LEFT IN STREET PRESENT ANGLE FAVOURED The purchase by the Gisborne Borough Council of a suitable area of land to form a parking place for motor cars in Gisborne was .the advice given by the secretary of the Automobile Association (Auckland), Mr G. W. Hutchison, in addressing motorists of Gisborne and the East Coast last night. "If Gisborne does this it will avoid the mistake made by both Auckland and Sydney,” said Mr Hutchison. "Procure a deceat site for a parking area near the heart of your town. If we had done that in Auckland we would not be in the position we are in today.” Mr Hutchison also advised .the retention of the present 32 degree angle parking in Gisborne. He said he based his opinion on observations not only in Auckland, but also in Australia and the United States. “If you go back to 45 degree angle parking you will reduce the useable space on the road,” be pointed out. “When you back out you will use more of the road than at present. Moreover, it is easier to drive in on an angle of 32 degrees. That is how i.t occurs to me.” , Mr Hutchison said the time would come when the establishment of pedestrian crossings in Gisborne would be an absolute necessity. “I think it is a mistake to make a pedestrian crossing where most people cross the street. In my opinion the crossings should be at the intersections, as in other countries.” On the motion of Mr J. Booth, the meeting decided to recommend to the Gisborne Borough Council that because of safety, the present 32 degree angle for parking should be retained in Gisborne. The motion was carried unanimously.
