SHARP FALL IN BIRTHS

FIGURES IN ENGLAND DEATHS LOWEST YET LONDON, March 3. A drop of 59.299 in the number of live births in England and Wales in 1945, compared with 1944, is shown in the provisional figures issued by the Registrar-General. For 1945 the total was 695,544, representing a rate of 16.1 per .thousand of population. The 1944 total was 744.843, or 17.5 per 1000. As the fall in births began towards the end of the first quarter of last year, it may be associated with the heavy exodus of service personnel from Britain after DDay, in 1944. Stillbirths represented 2.8 per cent of the total births, the lowest ever recorded total.

The 487,916 deaths, including noncivilians, gave a new low record rate of 11.4.
