Record Nominations For Marlborough
Record nominations have been received for the Marlborough Trotting Club for its annual meeting on March 16. In view of the large number of entries in the Wairau Handicap, the club has decided that in the event of divisions being necessary, to increase the stakes by £SS, providing £llO for each division. Cricketing: Honours The Poverty Bay cricketer, Murray Sharp, who is attending a refresher course in teaching in Canterbury, has been selected to fill a vacancy in the Canterbury team which is to meet the Australian touring side shortly. Sharp, who returned recently from the United Kingdom, played there as a member of the New Zealand Services cricket team and established a sound reputation both with boll and bat. Since taking up residence in Canterbury a few weeks ago he has been out with the West Christchurch team, and scored 40, 11, and 112 in successive innings. Last Saturday he played for Canterbury against The Rest, and made 48 runs and took live wickets. When Sharp was a prisoner-of-war, he took every opportunity of improving his general knowledge of the game while in contact with experienced English players, and he turned this practice to good account in the Services team.
