DROP £3 A HEAD

FIRST AUTUMN FAIR YOUNG CATTLE VALUES RESTRICTED YARDINGS The breaking of the drought came too late to affect materially the demand for store cattle at tile opening of the first cattle fair of the autumn series, held at the Matawhero yards yesterday. The entry was restricted to 195 S head of male cattle, and most lots offered, more particularly among the younger cattle, showed the effects of the dry season and the shortage of feed. Buyers were present from several outside districts, and they had the chance of picking up lots fairly cheaply ns district farmers regarded the chances of carrying stock through the winter a chancy business. Vendors were not prepared to throw away their stock, however, and many passings were recorded, particularly in respect of 3i-year *51061-5. compared with last year’s first autumn fair, young cattle prices were down by about £3 per head, and bullocks lost about £2 a head in value, these figures being better than were expected by many breeders.
