TASMAN SERVICE
ADDITIONAL AIRCRAFT LORD KNOWLLYS’ VIEWS AN INTERIM PERIOD (P.A.) AUCKLAND, March G. ’I think you will find tha.t there are definite plans for Tasman Empire Airways, Limited, to procure suitable additional aircraft to increase the frequency of its trans-Tasman service, and I hope it may be possible to provide these very shortly,” said Lord Knoliys, chairman of British Overseas Airways Corporation, in an interview in Auckland.
Lord Knoliys, accompanied by other members of the United Kingdom delegation to the civil aviation conference held in Wellington, arrived at Auckland by flying-boat late yesterday afterneon and left this morning on his way back to Britain by way of Australia and the Far EastLord Knoliys said he was not a director of Tasman Empire Airways, Limited, and therefore could not speak for the company, but the development now was in two phases, with an interim period beiore the new British aircraft became available. In the intervening period it was a question of getting more flying-boats to carry the many passengers wishing to fly the Tasman, and hence the extra aircraft to which he had referred probably would be flying-boats of a more modern type than the Empire boats Ao.tearoa and Awarua.
"These .things are settled by the Governments of the countries and whatever international airports the Government of New Zealand designates would be open to us to run services to,” Lord Knoliys said when asked if his company "still intended making Auckland .the New Zealand calling place lor the Kangaroo service from London by way of Australia. He said the choice of such sites did not rest with the operating companies.
