WOMEN’S BOWLS

EAST COAST CENTRE ANNUAL TOURNAMENT The East Coast Women’s Bowlin? Centre’s open rinks tournament was played in Hastings over four clays last week, several Gisborne rinks taking part. The Heretaunga club was the host club for the tourney, and 29 teams took part, the towns represented being Gisborne, Wanganui, Wellington, Palmerston North, Waitotara, Carterton, Port Ahuriri, Havelock North, New Plymouth and Hastings. The proceedings were opened by Mrs C. G. Wilkinson, Heretaunga, president of the centre, who welcomed all old and new members and visiting players. Mrs P. Mackay, Rivercide, Gisborne, vice-president of the centre, also spoke briefly and the conditions of play were dealt with by the secretary, Mrs W. Burge, Heretaunga. Weather conditions were fine throughout the fixture, and though the greens were extremely dry, the standard of play was good. Mrs C. Davy’s rink, one of the Gisborne district entries, won five games in section play to qualify for post-section play, incidentally scoring a win over the eventual winners of the tournament, skipped by Mrs Martin, Heretaunga, but losing to the same team later. Mrs Hair. New Plymouth, skipped the runnerup team in the tournament. Riverside (Gisborne) teams skipped by Mesdames T. Sangwell. C. Turbitt and W. Short had two wins each. Mrs W. Blair’s team had no wins, but played several good matches. Gisborne competitors in the fixture owed much to the hospitality of members of the Havelock North club, who were their hostesses for the occasion.
