BUSY DAYS

PARENTS OF V.C. HUNDREDS OF MESSAGES (P.A.) NELSON, March 5. The days which have followed the announcement of the award of the Victoria Cross to Squadron-Leader L. H. Trent have been busy ones for his parents, Mr and Mrs. L. Noel Trent. Wakefield quay. Hundreds of telephone calls from friends and acquaintances in the Nelson district have been supplemented by dozens of long-distance calls 'ram all parts of New Zealand. Sheaves of congratulatory telegrams also . have been received. Yesterday morning Mr. and Mrs. Trent were the guests: of Nelson College, where they attended morning assembly and heard an address by the principal. Mr. H. V. Searle, on Squad-ron-Leader Trent's achievements. The citation of his award was read and cheers were given by the boys for the V.C. winner and afterwards for his parents.

Mr. Trent, replying, said that Squadron-Leader Trent was the third generation of the family to attend Nelson College, his grandfather being one of the original 12 pupils. The only news of Squadron-Leader Trent received by his parents since the announcement of the award is contained in the following telegram from Mr. Stuart Lightbnnd, a former Nelsonian with whom Squadron-Leader Trent spent much of his leave in London: “What about our second son now? Wonderfully good work. Congratulations. All together for week-end. All well. His hat still fits him.”
