Limited Delayed

Owing to the breakdown of a goods train engine near Tuakau last night the Limited express from Auckland to. Wellington was delayed for one hour and threequarters.—P.A. . Hospital Staffing Difficulties A further reduction in the number of beds available to patients in all the Wellington Hospital Board’s institutions may be necessary if there is not a definite improvement soon in staffing. A statement to that effect was made yesterday by the chairman of the board, Mr H F. Toogood, commenting on the effect of the removal of the declaration of essentiality in respect of hospital service. The full effect, he said, could not be properly measured after only Ihree days, but the position reached already was giving considerable concern. —P.A. The Marco Case Twice found guilty by a. jury and sentenced to death —a sentence that was later commuted to life imprisonment—for the murder of his wife, Thelma Clarice Mareo, aged 29, m 1935, Eric Mareo, an Auckland musician, now 55 will move under the le-cently-passed Criminal Appeal. Act. The "first step will be an application to the Court of Appeal for an extension of the time allowed under the Act for the lodging of an appeal, and it that application is succesful an appeal will be made against his conviction. Ihe Court of Appeal met in Wellington yesterday to make its fixtures, and Mareo’s application for an extension of time will be heard next Monday. It is proposed, if leave of .the Court of Appeal is granted, to extend the time that the whole case should be argued on the application for leave to appeal.—P.A.
