NO CHANCES TAKEN
FIRE-BUG PRECAUTIONS
UNION CASTLE LINER LONDON, Feb. 13. After the receipt last evening of news in an anonymous letter stating that the Union Castle liner Carnarvon Castle would be set afire and blown up at Southampton, a special guard was mounted over the vessel. A police guard was aboard all night, the ship's firewatchers were doubled and a fire-float was moored nearby. The search on the ship is still proceeding. The letter, which was posted at Aldershot on February 11. may have been a hoax, but no chances were taken.
The ship is being overhauled after bringing women and children, mostly British ex-service personnel and their families, from South Africa.
