WOMEN’S PROTESTS

FOOD CUTS IN BRITAIN

DEMANDS FOR REVIEW

LONDON. Feb. 13,

Four thousand angry housewives at three Merseyside meetings demanded that the Minister of Food, Sir Ben Smith, should stop luxury banquets, investigate restaurant meals, increase rations, and cut supplies of food from Britain to Europe. The feelings were heightened when members of the services told the meetings that there was food enough and to spare in France, Belgium, Holland and even Germany.

The Minister of Food stated that he hoped to resume the issue of dried eggs in May. He had already contracted for 12,000 tons and hoped to get a further 3000 tons each from the Argentine and America, 6000 tons from Canada, and perhaps 3000 from Australia. He said that Britain did not possess enough refrigerator ships to import all the food available.
