UNRRA FOR CHINA
STAFF APPOINTMENTS
SHORT-NOTICE CALLS
A substantial number of UNRRA posts in the China field are available at present to men of the right qualifications who are also able to leave New Zealand at short notice.
Correspondence on these posts has been received by the Gisborne Returned Services’’ Association from the national headquarters of the association, which lias been invited by the deputy-director of UNRRA for New Zealand to assist in finding applicants among ex-service people. The present tenure of the appointments, until March, 1947, is one of the handicaps in filling the vacancies; and another is that any successful applicant must be prepared to leave his family behind on the chance that they might be able to join him later, at his expense. Salaries offered arc commensurate with the qualifications required of applicants. which are high. of living is paid on the field in addition to salaries, but taxation is levied at the rate applicable in the country of the appointee’s origin, i.e., a New Zealander accepting an appointment will pay income tax at the rate ruling in New Zealand. Substantial Inducements A chief economic analysis officer will receive £I2OO per annum to commence, and a medical supply officer £780; chief accountants are wanted at £IOOO. and finance and administration officers, distributing officers, industrial rehabilitation track specialists and highways engineers, waterworks and sanitary inspectors and electric-power distribution officers all rate £I2OO per annum, and many other posts carry commencing salaries of £IOOO. Emphasis is placed in the outline of conditions upon the possession of good personality, tact, resourcefulness, patience, balance and a high degree of physical condition. The professional qualifications are equally exacting, and appointees who satisfy all the requirements should indeed find a happy field of work in the UNRRA staff in China. As file appointees are to reach China on March 31, the selection of suitable types will be a rush job, and consequently only a tew days remain in which New Zealand applications can be dealt with. Applications forwarded through the N.Z.R.S.A., for instance, must be in the hands of Dominion headquarters by noon on Tuesday, February 19. In communicating this and other conditions of application, the general secretary of flic N..Z.R.S.A. indicates that the UNRRA deputy-director in New Zealand received notice ot the vacancies only on February 12.
