NEW STAMP ISSUE
DOMINION TRIBUTES
SALE BEGINS APRIL 1
Stamps commemorating peace are expected to be ready for sale throughout the Dominion on April 1. The stamps, which depict every phase of New Zealand's war effort, as well as scenic studies of well-known parts of tile Dominion, cover 11 denominations. The stamps were printed in England from designs bv Mr. J. Berry, Wellington. They are attractive in appearance. Mr. Berry has now designed a considerable number of New Zealand's postage stamps. Lake Malhcson Scene
Lake Matheson and the Southern Alps have been chosen as the subject for the Id stamp. Tile scene is beautiful and peaceful and is a fitting introduction to the new series. The centre is deep green in colour and the border brown and purple. ' The Id stamp shows Parliament Buildings, with an inset portrait of the King. Bright green in colour, it is de-. signed ns a symbol of the Dominion’s adherence to constitutional methods of Government. The dome of St. Paul’s in a V-shaped frame with laurel leaves and the Union Jack in the background forms the subject of the ltd stamp. It is a tribute to the people of Britain. The colour is signal red. The 2d stamp is royal blue in colour and consists of a picture of the Royal Family. Tributes To The .Services The 3d, 4d and 5d stamps are tributes to the Royal New Zealand Air Force, the Army and the Royal New Zealand Navy respectively. The 6d stamp is a tribute to the workers on the home front. It displays .the New Zealand coat ,of arms and workshop and rural scenes. A tribute to the youth of the Dominion is paid in the 8d stamp, the subject of which is the stained-glass window of the Wellington College Memorial Hall. The fld stamp is particularly beautiful. For it the Southern Alps and the Franz Josef Glacier, as seen through the chapel window at Waiho Gorge, have been selected to symbolise the spirit of thankfulness for the saving of our way of life. The centre is pale ultramarine and the border black.
For the Is stamp, a memorial of the First World War has been chosen as a symbol of remembrance of the fallen in both wars. It is the National Memorial Campanile, which houses the carillon in Wellington. The colour is blue grey.
