English Problems
Some indication of conditions existing in England at present is given by a resident of Newcastle-on-Tyne in a letter to a friend in Petone. The letter stated that the English people will be very glad when the clothing coupon system is abolished. They are issued with 24 coupons for six months, and 18 coupons are required for a coat or costume; a man’s suit takes 20 coupons. Mousing, too, is a problem. Houses normally valued at £SOO are selling for £I3OO, while suites of furniture worth £25 are being sold for £145. A pair of sheets costs not less than £7. To add to the general discomfort, the people arc experiencing a bitterly cold winter.
