BRITAIN’S STRENGTH
OFTEN UNDERESTIMATED It is a mistake for an outsider to misjudge the British bulldog. It has often been done before, writes a London correspondent of the Christian Science Monitor. The Germans did in the 1030’s. They were sure Britain was decadent and would not fight. Misjudginent and underestimation of Britain has in fact caused the world a lot of trouble in the past. Continental Europe thinks of England as Perfidious Albion, but this is partly the fault of Europeans dedeviding themselves. Britain was persistently underestimated before World War 11. It may therefore be better for visitors seeking the bulldog to think of it as chained up or on a reconditioning course rather than as gone to seed.
